Expand Your Personal Brand Book and Workbook Are On Sale for 99 Cents for a Limited Time

From now until June 15, 2018, Expand Your Personal Brand Book and Workbook are on sale for 99 cents!

I have done this because I want you, the reader, to experience the same professional growth that I have experienced. I already know that you are no slouch. You are a high performer constantly giving your all at work but you are frustrated because you feel as if you are being overlooked. You feel like you are spinning your wheels and no matter how many hours you work or company trainings you take, you aren’t getting ahead.

I have been there before. I have been stuck working long hours for $10/hour. I felt like I was doing everything right but I was stuck spinning my wheels. I was emotionally exhausted from doing everything right but getting the wrong results. I wanted change and so I started investing in myself.

In my book, I discussed why self-investment is the best investment; and, how I save a percentage of my non-rent paycheck every month and enrolled in continuing education courses. Initially it was hard because I wasn’t making much but I stuck with it. Changing this one habit created a snowball effect. It just kept growing. The more I invested in myself, the more success I experienced.

I want the same thing for you which is why I am putting my book on sale at 99 cents for the next two weeks. And I am NOT stopping there! My workbook is also on sale for 99 cents in my store and Amazon. My Expand Your Personal Brand bundle is available for $1.49. I truly want you to win in June and BEYOND. I only ask for one thing: please leave a kind review.

Learn 5 Easy Ways to Make Bank by Branding You

Developing a personal brand strategy is essential towards career advancement. It’s not just who you know, it is also who knows you! This is why your personal brand is major towards you getting promoted (aka making bank!).

Even before you walk into the office for an interview, your personal brand proceeds you. You want people to say good things about you don’t you? Of course, you do! Here are several tips towards creating a dynamic personal brand strategy.

Your Competitive Advantage is Your Foundation

Your competitive advantage is the one thing that you do better than anyone else. It is also the foundation towards building your personal brand strategy. You must discover then market it to employers to guarantee landing that job offer that you cover. The main question you must ask yourself is what sets you apart from everyone else? (I discuss competitive advantage steps in my article here: http://bit.ly/1ZXCRzH)

Know your target market (companies that would benefit from your talents)

This is a critical step. One of the biggest mistakes that people often make is being everything to everyone. Well, you cannot do this which is why I stress knowing your target market. Once you’ve discovered your competitive advantage, research which industries are best suited for your talent. For instance, if you are a fashion designer, you wouldn’t apply for a construction job. You must know which industries complement your competitive advantage in order to successful craft your strategy.

Know how you want to position your brand

Brand positioning is another critical component. How are you marketing yourself? Are you entry-level, mid-level or senior-level? These are just the basics. We can drill deeper down into a category. For example, at the senior level, are you vying for a director, vice president or chairman position? These three different jobs require three different brand positioning strategies. That’s why you cannot be general here because you will get too many jobs that are not great fits. These generalities also waste a lot of your time sifting through these numerous positions.

Develop your pitch

Whether you like it or not, you are always in the business of selling yourself. Developing your pitch is your way to communicate your personal brand strategy. Your pitch should be in between 15-30 seconds long and include these four factors:

  • who you are,
  • what you do,
  • what you are looking for and
  • how you can solve a problem

 Own yourself and your content

In the 21st century, owning your name domain is essential towards controlling your personal brand strategy; but, there are so many people who don’t own it. You must have your own platform to control what kind of message you want to transmit. Although social media is free, you don’t want to be at the mercy of Twitter, LinkedIn or any other sites to communicate your message. Go to Name.com, Domain.com or GoDaddy.com to search your name. If it is available, then buy it. Next, buy a self-hosted WordPress site not anything with name.wordpress.com! That’s unprofessional but more importantly, WordPress controls your platform. Go to WordPress.org, BlueHost or HostGator for self-hosting sites. There are many others.

I would also recommend that you start blogging on your site. Part of crafting your personal brand strategy is positioning yourself as an expert. Blogging about your professional expertise is a way to get noticed. Create content that supports your brand positioning. Write articles around your competitive advantage. The majority of my articles center around economics, brand management, change management and project management. For example, I publish my articles on my blog first before posting it on LinkedIn and Medium. There are so many people naively posting on LinkedIn who don’t have their own platforms. You cannot control your message when you don’t own yourself. LinkedIn owns all of your copyrights when you publish there first.

Develop a comprehensive brand marketing strategy

In marketing there are 4 Ps : product, price, place and promotion. Here you will create a comprehensive brand marketing strategy in order to capitalize upon all available opportunities. Once you have completed all of the previous tasks, doing this is fairly easy. Here is my 4Ps:

  • Product: you
  • Price: current or future salary
  • Place: Anywhere or your preferred region
  • Promotion:
    • In-person
    • Online: LinkedIn, social media, blog, website, podcasting

You are the product. The price is your current or future salary. If you are going for a promotion, research salaries through sites like Glassdoor.com, so that you aren’t lowballing yourself. You can also look at professional organizations because they keep salary profiles. For place, you can market yourself in a specific region or be open to relocation. Your strategy will change based on this. With promotion, you can sell yourself online as well as in-person. Always have an in-person component because you need to meet real people because it will be they not the computer algorithm that hires you.

I Won The Hard Work and Dedication Award!

I Won the DC Department of Employment Services (DOES)

Hard Work and Dedication Award!

On Wednesday, May 9, 2018 the DC Department of Employment Services (DOES) honored me with the Hard Work and Dedication Award. I received this award during the inaugural Workforce Recognition Event. Held at the University of the District of Columbia Bertie Berkus building, the DOES Workforce Recognition event honored its best participants.

I was completely humbled by the honor. I didn’t even know I was nominated about this Hard Work and Dedication award. All I did was implement the training that I received in the marketplace and took advantage of every available opportunity. I was no smarter or better than anyone else. All I did was ask for more training and received it from DOES.

The Department of Employment Services provides job seekers with a number of employment opportunities. Each center provides career counseling, resume assistance, job placement, vocational training, access to online services, information about local and national labor markets, unemployment insurance, and much more.

Watch my video thanking everyone for their support!

This Week in PCM: Someone Is Always Watching

Someone is always watching. Always. Regardless of what you do. Today I watch my book marketing agent LaTanyha Boyd do a Facebook Live where she complements me on my branding. This takes me by surprise because 1) I have very bad tunnel vision and 2) I have never seen her on any of my Earned Value Management Explained broadcasts. Her compliments get me thinking that people are always watching you no matter how much you think they aren’t. They also reinforce HOW I show up. I show up with a coherent message, signature look and a standard setting. These are three things that will set you a part from everyone else in the video marketing and livestreaming realm.

Have a coherent message

Don’t get on camera and start ramblingly incoherently. I know that sounds simple but you would be amazed at how many people are out there doing just that on video. Although livestream is still in its infancy, you can still present a coherent message by writing down an outline or some talking points. Remember, livestream be it Twitter Live, Periscope, Instagram Live, Facebook Live or YouTube Live, are video branding channels. If you show up rambling, speaking incoherently that’s how others will view your brand.

Have a signature look

This is a must for these reasons: 1) it makes you memorable and 2) dressing is nonverbal communication. Most people don’t  see dressing as nonverbal communication but how you dress communicates to people a whole lot of things. That’s why I wear a black top to all of my livestream videos. Black is a professional color and it is easy to repurpose. Many people on Periscope and Facebook Live repurpose their broadcasts onto YouTube. It is easier to repurpose a black top onto YouTube than numerous broadcasts with you wearing many different colors.

Black is my brand color. Color is very important for personal branding (yes, you ARE a personal brand!). Having a signature look with a specific brand color convey organization. The viewer knows that he or she is watching someone who is pulled together. Remember, as I have stated before: your dress is a form of nonverbal communication. Having a signature look communicates to the audience that you are a real professional.

Have a standard background

I have one place where I do all of my broadcasts. It is comfortable, well-lit and creates a positive customer experience. What goes on in the background is just as important as what goes on in the foreground. Shooting from one place gives the audience a specific kind of experience. Whether it’s your bedroom, home office, corporate office, cubicle or park bench, having a standard background projects stability and consistency with the viewer. If you or the people in your background are all over the place, then your audience will think the same.

Here are my three tips to make sure that you present a positive video image and message. Remember, whether you know or not, someone is always watching. To work with Phenomena Corporation, visit us at www.carlarjenkins.com/work and info@carlarjenkins.com
