Don’t Discount December! There’s Still Plenty To Do!

Many people are looking past December ahead of January and the New Year. This is a bad mistake because there is still so much that you can do right now. Personally, I have received my second training request approved this week. I also receive my application/suitability letter from the training facility because I am going through a third-party vendor. Now if I were complacent packing it in and pressing the reset button in a few weeks, I would have missed this opportunity. Yet, there is still plenty that you can do in December.

Here are ten tips that will guide you through completing your goals, decluttering your environment, increasing productivity and morale plus building future momentum.

  1. Don’t Panic, Get Organized!

This is not the time to freak out! You have a short time period to accomplish something. Besides panicking is a time waster that you can ill-afford with a deadline right around the corner. Getting organized is a much better way towards spending your time. Organize every outstanding task regardless of time period. Right now during this stage, you just want to acknowledge everything around you.

  1. Focus on the now!

Now we are whittling down on what to do in a time crunch. You have only ten days to complete something; therefore, anything over ten days needs to be abandoned immediately. You need short-term wins right now.

  1. Make lists

Take all of the short term tasks and list them. You want to know all of the outstanding tasks that you still have to do during this ten-day time period.

  1. Prioritize

List these tasks in order of importance with the ones that have the biggest consequences (positive or negative) first. This helps you see where you should throw your attention.

  1. Break it down even further

Many people stop at prioritizing because they feel like listing all of the tasks means that they have accomplished something. That’s wrong because even though something will take less than 10 days does not mean that it is a priority. Some tasks can actually harm your progress towards the most important tasks out there. Eliminating the non-essential short-term tasks save time which you have very little of to begin with.

  1. Schedule down time

You are not a machine! You are a human who eat and sleeps. Oftentimes, when creating the schedule, people leave these things out and the results are disastrous! Remember, that on average a person works 6 ½ hours of an 8-hour day incorporating lunch and scheduled breaks. Be realistic when creating your schedule.

  1. Build in a buffer

Just like you have built in breaks for the people, your schedule needs a buffer too. A buffer gives you leeway just in case something takes longer than expected. I recommend having a 1-2 day buffer on a 10-day schedule just in case. If you are under the gun, you don’t want to create a schedule with no wiggle room. One thing is for certain: there are always surprises which is all the more reason why you create a buffer to protect you from uncertainty.

  1. Set up a goal tracker

You do have to measure your progress in real time. A goal tracker keeps everyone honest by tracking how many milestones and tasks are completed within the allotted time.

  1. Reward Yourself for Progress

This is a morale booster. Reward yourself and your team whenever you have completed a milestone. You are celebrating progress; but also it boosts the morale of your team because you are closer towards your goal.

  1. Kill the Inner Critic

Last but not least, kill the inner critic! Negativity has no place here. Regardless of who did or did not do whatever, you have ten days remaining to accomplish something. The last thing you need is negativity and infighting. Killing the negativity and dissension are two ways towards ensuring that you complete your tasks in ten days.

Shrink to Expand : 5 Ways to Get Laser-Focused to Chase Your Dreams!

Because life is too short to be a spectator in the game of life!

I am all about chasing your biggest dreams and accomplishing everything you heart desires. I want you to squeeze every bit of juice out life and get the most out of it. This also means staying laser-focused in order to pursue these dreams. Oftentimes, our dreams get derailed by people and things that distract us. I have fell victim to them too but overcome them to make my dreams come true. You can achieve the same thing.

Here are my 5 ways to get laser-focused and chase your dreams. Because life is too short to be a spectator in the game of life!

Eliminate all distractions.

Distractions derail you from your dreams. Busyness is particularly sneaky distraction because it masked itself as productivity. Busyness will have you spinning your wheels thinking that you are making progress but all you are doing is getting frustrated that you’re in the same place as before. Sometimes you are worse off due to busyness.

Busyness is not the only thing to guard against. Be on the lookout for energy and spirit vampires. These are people who jump in your face stealing your time and self-esteem when they see you on your way to greatness. Drop them like a bad habit because these vampires distract you from your goals.

Pick one thing.

You can only chase one dream at a time. You are a junior level analyst wanting to be a senior manager. Before you become a senior manager, you must get promoted to middle management first. See, picking one thing gets your laser-focus because you are dead set on one specific outcome. The way to realize your dream to achieve a specific outcome.

Set deadlines with scheduled breaks.

A dream without a deadline is a wish. Setting a deadline makes the dream real because there is a timetable with some accountability. I have also mentioned incorporating scheduled breaks during milestones. Why? Because you are a human not a machine. You need rest. You would be amazed at how many schedules don’t have any breaks. Scheduled breaks eliminate burnout. You DON’T want to be burnt out chasing your dreams.

Visual reminders for positive reinforcement.

You need positive reinforcement throughout your journey. Having visual reminders will keep you motivate to stay the course. Now, I love Pinterest boards but you can do Instagram, Tumblr or paper collages. Find photos of your dream life to get to your next life. When you visualize your dream life, you know that you are closer towards achieving it. Visualization helps it become second nature. That’s when you know that your own your way.

Celebrate

Reward your being laser-focused with a celebration. You have been disciplined, accountable and now have achieved your dream life. Take time to reflect on all of the things that you’ve overcome to arrive here.

These 5 ways will increase your focus, getting you closer towards living your dreams.
