Someone is always watching. Always. Regardless of what you do. Today I watch my book marketing agent LaTanyha Boyd do a Facebook Live where she complements me on my branding. This takes me by surprise because 1) I have very bad tunnel vision and 2) I have never seen her on any of my Earned Value Management Explained broadcasts. Her compliments get me thinking that people are always watching you no matter how much you think they aren’t. They also reinforce HOW I show up. I show up with a coherent message, signature look and a standard setting. These are three things that will set you a part from everyone else in the video marketing and livestreaming realm.
Have a coherent message
Don’t get on camera and start ramblingly incoherently. I know that sounds simple but you would be amazed at how many people are out there doing just that on video. Although livestream is still in its infancy, you can still present a coherent message by writing down an outline or some talking points. Remember, livestream be it Twitter Live, Periscope, Instagram Live, Facebook Live or YouTube Live, are video branding channels. If you show up rambling, speaking incoherently that’s how others will view your brand.
Have a signature look
This is a must for these reasons: 1) it makes you memorable and 2) dressing is nonverbal communication. Most people don’t see dressing as nonverbal communication but how you dress communicates to people a whole lot of things. That’s why I wear a black top to all of my livestream videos. Black is a professional color and it is easy to repurpose. Many people on Periscope and Facebook Live repurpose their broadcasts onto YouTube. It is easier to repurpose a black top onto YouTube than numerous broadcasts with you wearing many different colors.
Black is my brand color. Color is very important for personal branding (yes, you ARE a personal brand!). Having a signature look with a specific brand color convey organization. The viewer knows that he or she is watching someone who is pulled together. Remember, as I have stated before: your dress is a form of nonverbal communication. Having a signature look communicates to the audience that you are a real professional.
Have a standard background
I have one place where I do all of my broadcasts. It is comfortable, well-lit and creates a positive customer experience. What goes on in the background is just as important as what goes on in the foreground. Shooting from one place gives the audience a specific kind of experience. Whether it’s your bedroom, home office, corporate office, cubicle or park bench, having a standard background projects stability and consistency with the viewer. If you or the people in your background are all over the place, then your audience will think the same.
